Well, how else would you do it? Once upon a time, it used to be possible to
run the linux boot loader from DOS, but that hasn't been an option since
Windows stopped actually using DOS.  For a system that is supposed to not
require removal or repartitioning of Windows, it certainly makes sense to
use the Windows boot loader.

That's no huge surprise - the one on the install disk is presumably not as
up-to-date.

That is unfortunate - because I've tried modifying that $%^&* Vista boot
loader myself, and it really isn't an option for the normal user.
