Thanks. I don't feel crazy anymore.
Have you tried launching kde4.1 from a new user account (one that doesn't have
any legacy configuration files in it)? I've seen different behaviors from
different accounts on the same machine which leads me to wonder whether
there's some non-kde4.1 config file that's messing things up.
