No, it doesn't even do that. It updates the _list_ of available packages.
You need to use "sudo aptitude update; sudo aptitude safe-upgrade"
(or "full-upgrade", depending. Read the man pages!).

Naturally. NEVER use sudo for GUI programs unless you know what you're
doing. Use kdesu (admittedly, if you run it without, you'll see it
says "use kdesu or sudo" - file a bug).
