Kubuntu issues

Hi all
Well I have what I imagine to be the lastest version of Kubuntu and it 
was going well right up unitl the point I did an update....then as 
indicated I reebooted the poota...and got to the log in screen...put in 
the password that I'd used before and it re looped to the log in screen.

I've re set the password still the same thing happens.

So what do I do next?
