System not accessible after installation of Kubuntu.

When you boot your laptop select recovery mode in the grub menu.  This 
will boot you into a text console as the root user (i.e. super user).

To check that you got the username right when you installed, enter the 
command 'ls /home'.

To reset the password, enter the command 'passwd xx' where xx is your 
username.  You will be prompted to enter a new password twice.
