Accented characters

From time to time I want to be able to type words and short passages in
French, Italian, Polish and perhaps other languages. To do this I need to be
able to access characters with accents. I find it unutterably tedious to go
fishing for them in KCharSelect every time I want to use one of these
characters, and I don't want to have squillions of alternative keyboard
layouts and sticky labels all over my keys (I once used an internet café in
Prague and it did my head in.)
There has to be a better way, even if only for the basic accented letters in
French, surely? Using key sequences?
Can anybody help?
