GMail has been like that since the beginning. They think that is a feature.

I suppose that everyone here has at least another smpt beside Gmail's, so 
that's the easiest way to go about it.

To get rid of all that, then it could be better to use newsgroups and a 
newsreader, just like Derek does. It's even faster. it seems like messages 
are getting there first.
