I myself have noticed that the live/install CD doesn't have a repair option - 
found out last night when an update broke my KDE, including adept.  I think 
it's a major shortcoming of Kubuntu.  Wait to hear from more knowledgeable 
users, but personally, I think you're going to have to reinstall.
