Any problems I should be aware of when upgrading machines?

I have an AMD Athlon 20K+ 32bit machine on which I have Kubuntu 7.10
installed. Regularly I do a back up (about monthly) on to an external
hard drive, of my /usr and /home directories.

My wife has bought me an Antac Assus 64bit dual core machine. I have
downloaded (on the 32 bit machine) the 64 bit version of Kubuntu Gutsy.

Can I just install the 64bit version of Kubuntu, and then copy the /home
directory from my external hard drive (which was itself copied from my
32 bit machine) to the 64 bit machine?

Are there likely to be any problems upgrading like this?

Is there a recommended matter of upgrading like this?
