Accented characters: sudden strange difficulty to produce them.

Pro tem, do all your typing in OOo and copy and paste into other applications, 
as appropriate? 

I quite often do this anyway with long emails - my email client, although in 
many ways great, will not save as I go along, and I am a lousy typist and 
hate having to type everything again if csomething goes wrong. :-(
