Right, the text isn't perfect because a swap partition isn't mounted.

I'm not sure I understand - did it partially boot but want you to manually
fsck the root partition?

Now that you have restored from the backup you could try the same
operation again. It would be interesting to save the error details if
there is again the same error. OTOH, I suppose you don't want to wait
another 3 hours.
