Cannot use Compiz

I would like to use Compiz.  My current system gets bogged down.  When I 
removed Compiz, it regained life.  My current computer is a 2.3ghz Pentium 4 
with 1gb ram.  When I run Compiz, everything else bogs down, even the mouse 
movement and keyboard strikes.

Is this a common symptom for Compiz users?
