Just a replica:

I get similar message when trying to play movie dvd's on my laptop dvd drive
on kubuntu 8.04, and I can play those same dvd's on my desktop computer - no
problem, the os is the same.

By the way, my notebook is asus :) And my desktop is not.

could that be the dvd drive problem? Can you try to use it on windows? I get
the same results on both os'es.
