KDE 4.1 won't start

If you rename it, KDE will create a new one with default settings. Not a bad
thing in my view and sometimes the only way to resolve an issue like that.
And when you get good at it, you can copy things out of the renamed directory
(like email addresses) into the new .kde directory.
But have you checked the permissions on your home directory? When you
installed 8.01, it might have given your user a new UID and you would need to
change the ownership of files.
All of this is a major reason why I never do an update in place. Always
install fresh to new partitions and setting the old release partitions aside.
