Unable to log in to KDE4 using Hardy

You should have the file .xsession-errors in your home directory where 
you could look at, else the files in /var/log/ of course.

But... I encountered a similar behaviour with my wife's PC running 
Dapper. Her root partition was full at 100% so KDE wasn't able to 
create it's temporary session files. So you might want to check 
whether your partitions are perhaps out of space. Go to a textconsole 
and type in:
df -h
that will get you the filesystem stats.
