FWIW: 
I had trouble installing kubuntu 8.04 with kde4 as well.  I don't have a
Dell.  I have an asus mobo with just 512mb ram.  I attributed my
problems with not enough ram. I gave up and installed ubuntu 8.04. (I
had already installed it on a PIII with 256mb ram so figured it should
work ok.)
