make sure your menu.lst file has something similar to:
title Ubuntu 7.10, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic
root (hd0,5)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic root=UUID=<UUIDnumber> ro
quiet splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.22-14-generic
quiet
The "quiet splash" part is what you need.
Then, if that's there you need to check for the "kubuntu-artwork-usplash"
package. If that's not installed install it, and you should be in good
shape.
