Display manager problem

I've tried a couple of times with this problem with no luck, so I'm
trolling again...(as in fishing, not as in under the bridge).

If I boot my Feisty box from the HD, the boot proceeds OK until the
Display Manager tries to display the login. Then nothing but a black screen.

If, on the other hand, I boot from a LiveCD (doesn't seem to matter
which one) and choose "Boot from First HD" all is well.

Anybody got any ideas?
