Thanks for the help
FYI here's what I ended up doing:
(1) sudo modprobe visor
(2) set Kpilot device to /dev/pilot
(3) press the sync button (Note: the auto configure did not find the device,
but upon manually entering the device & username all is good).
No crashes, all my data sync'd properly, etc using a treo 680
