Can I "Watch" a thread with Kmail?

No, but You can filter all watched threads out ouf the whole bunch of mails 
you get just by selecting the Status "Watched" on the right top corner of 
Kmail's window. And the watched threads will always stay open, while the 
other threads can all stay closed. That way it's much easier to watch your 
thread for new messages.
