Downloading software problems and screen resolution problems.

I recently installed Kubuntu 7.04. When I first installed it, my Audigy sound card worked for a little while. As I installed software, things changed. I was installing 30 to 40 files at a time, so I do not know which installations affected my computer, however, after installing about a gig of data, I no longer have any sound. Additionally, now I am locked out of the installation process. The instruction says that some other program is using the installation program and I have to close that program before it will resume downloading. I am able to identify and instruct the installation of additional programs, however, the button that activates the installation is greyed out and does nothing when I click on it. No options are available to cure the problem, and I lose all the work that went into identifying additional programs and files I wanted in my system. To top it off, my video card is now producing 640 x 480 and I can't find any way to change back to a higher resolution. Everything is so big, I have to scroll horizontally and vertically both to try to accomplish anything. To recapitulate, my video is at 640 x 480, the sound doesn't work, and I am blocked from installing any more files, so if there is a fix in any of them, I can not get to it.
I have a Pentium 4, 2.25 ghz with 1 gig of ram. My video card is ATI All in Wonder 6000 with only 64 megs of ram. My sound card is SoundBlaster Audity II. I have downloaded and installed at least 1065 megs of data into the Kubuntu system.
I am older with not the best of memory. I am writing you from the Win XP Pro OS. Please tell me what information I may give you that will be more helpful.
One other thing, my password was rejected several times. I thought I had maybe changed it without remembering, however, I only use 3 passwords for my computer needs. I tried all of them several times and very carefully. Finally the one I thought was correct caught. I am enjoying the learning curve, but only using Windows has made it extremely difficult to locate what might be a normal fix using Windows. I have been working all day trying to get all the Ubuntu and Kubuntu files and folders and ?.exe's if they are called that were provided with the download program. Every time I reboot, the computer comes a little more alive using Kubuntu. I suspect my problems are common to you by now. Thanks for any help you may give. Regardless, I am going to fight this out until I have a smoothly functioning system. Thanks!
