smb.conf changes itself

I had suspected this for some time, but I can now confirm that 
something's changing my smb.conf file. Now...what's doing that?

To be clear, my  smb.conf file specified workgroup and server string. I 
changed our local private address space from 192.168.1.x to 192.168.7.x. 
I rebooted and suddenly couldn't see the Kubuntu server in the XP 
machines' Network Neighborhood. I checked smb.conf, and the two lines 
had been eliminated. The carriage returns were still there, just the 
content of the lines was missing.

I'm mystified....anybody have a suggestion?
