I am using the same card and it alsways worked out of the box for me.

what gives you:

$ lsmod | grep emu10k1

?

emu10k1 is the kernel driver for that card

when opening alsamixer in upper left corner is the model of the card?
what is it there, are there rulers set to zero?

you will need at last PCM and the first (canĀ“t remember that channel - i am
in front of an other pc) set to ~50%

if that is all ok check:
kcontrol > sound & multimedia > soundsystem > Hardware
alsa (advanced linux sound architectur) should be ok

then one step back on "General" hit "test sound"

if there is nothing check you cable and hardware.
