cannot boot into kubuntu installer

Upon booting from my Kudbuntu CD, I get a menu to boot or install into
kubuntu and a "safe graphical mode kubuntu". If either of these are
clicked, it loads for a while and puts me onto a console. I have tried
CTRL+ALT+F7 but it is blank.

What do I do now? I was expecting an installation screen or live cd.
The ISO file name is kubuntu-6.10-desktop-i386.iso. I have used the
facility on the disc to check for integrity. It reported fine.

Can someone give me guidance on what I should do?
