I might have mentioned that in my own case, using Firefox, I keep 
auto-quoting turned off, since my usual is to reply only to a small 
portion of a post.  But on the somewhat rare occasion that I want to 
start with a full quote, there is a quote button on the toolbar, and 
then I can snip and reply 'til my heart's content.  I think this is the 
best of both worlds.
