network profiles

So when I load a different network profile, it uses values that are
already stored in one of those configuration files?  This doesn't make
sense to me because, for example, I have a few different hosts file
entries based on which network profile I'm using and the values for my
different profiles are not present in the file and simply uncommenting
it or some method like that...
