Hmm. Have you tried:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall kubuntu-desktop
That seems like it would at least get you back to a usable desktop (not
tested from your situation).

Thanks for replying.
It was far more fun to just reinstall and start from scratch.
This machine had a Windows XP partition on it as well, and I think
that there were "issues" with Linux running on it as well as XP.
Being so new to Linux, I could not be sure, but it all seems to work
better now.
(How is that for vague <g>?
Nuking and paving (reformatting the drives and reinstalling Kubuntu)
was easier, gave me a chance to fix some things that I think I did wrong
the first time
and gave me a sense of accomplishment that "I was finally rid of
Microsoft". <g>
At least on that machine. Once I figure out how networking works, and
how to create an ISO
of the machine that works, I can dump Microsoft from the other machines
as well.
Inadvertently being "stupid" allowed me a learning experience.
I won't make the same mistake again. If I do, then I am REALLY REALLY
stupid <g>.
Best,
