Problem with /dev/dsp

enter "alsamixer" in a terminal and when the display pops up, hit "h" to 
get the menu.  On my card, I hit F5 to show all and then can see that 
"mic" is the only input.  But mine also shows volumes at zero for the 
"capture".  I assume that these volumes need to be raised.

In kmix, on the input tab, I see 2 volumes.  One has a dark bulb below 
it and is at zero.  I can click the mouse on the bulb and it will glow 
brighter and I can also raise the volume.  The other one is already at 
100% and has a bright bulb.  I assume the darker bulb means it's off (as 
would a zero volume).
