Hmmm. alias

The reply to the solution on the alias problem raised an issue.

Are you using unbuntu/kubunutu 7.04? Does

ps

show you are indeed running the bash shell?

The alias command is a "built-in" command. If you run

which alias

it should not return anything. That's what happens on my
system.

If I try your

sudo apt-get install alias

it will install

The following NEW packages will be installed:
  libalias-perl

and only that package and in the process uninstalls three other
packages.

Hopefully your problem will not return in the future and if it
does you have a fix. I personally like to know why something
happened in addition to the fix to make sure that it never
returns again.

In doing tutorials and slides I often times turn off the
DIR_COLORS because the output from ls with colors on is
quite ugly in a script file output. For those of us that
have been around before the new terminals the option -F
holds a special warm spot in our command line options. :-)

FYI
