I'm running Feisty with Open Office 2.2 (from OOo) and I cannot get it 
to crash.
When I do the steps you outline, the wizard starts just fine.
Did you load Open Office from the source or from the Kubuntu distro?
If you loaded just what came with the distro, try to grab it from Adept 
and install it
"automatically".  That way it also grabs any dependencies it needs at 
the same time
and configures itself. It will install right over what came with the distro.
