Well thanks for trying... Though I've tripped over some more info that
might be relevant... I mentioned I use startx... Well I just noticed
that when I close down kde, the text dumped into the console where I ran
startx includes what I think is a relevant error message. I'm just
ashamed to say I didn't even see this sooner... my poor excuse is that
by the time I/me shutting down lately I'm usually to tired to do more
than the threefinger salute to start an immediate shutdown...
Yesterday my lady was threatening a cold supper so I left the pc running.
until today... when I came back I noticed the word "XKEYBOARD" right
above the word error... That woke me right up! <grin>

The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:

Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
