backing up kmail

Problem solved!  The files are all there.  The original version 
(~/.kde/share/apps/kmail) requires that view => show hidden files be
checked to see the contents of .kde.  After that, the contents
are visible without further manipulation of the view mode.  The copied
directory, ~/kmail or /media/sda1/kmail, does not require a change of
the view mode to see its subdirectories, but it does require a change
to see some of the files stored in deeper subdirectories.

It appears that one must check "show hidden files" at least once to
see hidden subdirectories and files below the level for which the option is 
initiated.  That just didn't occur to me since my ~ level copy of kmail 
didn't require it.
