I think what we´re talking about here is EXPORTing, not importing the 
messages.
KMail does (I just checked) have a Ctrl+S or File>Save as option.
It does not list available file formats, but I just saved a msg as a 
.txt and then successfully opened and read
it in Kate.
(Does import msgs, too, apparently).
