Monitor says "Synch. out of range..." apparently solved

MANY THANKS to the fellow user who suggested I should try
"dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" in the console to recapture my KDE 
desktop after my OS had become accessible only in recovery mode.
Now I have one more incentive to get acquainted with Linux's inner workings.
And you just saved my life.
