I have Samsung ML-1710P and it also have Linux drivers from Samsung and also opensource version is
included by default. I would like to use Linksys PSUS4 USB printserver. Under Windows it is working
like a charm but not in Linux. Sometimes I got it working (under Kubuntu 6.06) but suddenly it stops
working and no idea, where to look problems :( I installed Samsung Unified Linux Driver, tried
several PPD-s but nothing.
Today I tried the same printer and printserver under Fedora Core 6 - did not worked. I turned off
firewall and SELinux - didn't help. I installed Fedora Core 6 under VM Ware - perhaps this were
problem, who knows.
It seems like Samsung and its proprietary GDI would be problem. But Samsung itself provides driver
for Linux - why it is not working? It seems like it doesn't like my Linux or CUPS version, who knows...
Second situation - HP LaserJet 6P and TrendNet printserver (don't remember model) at my workplace is
working like a charm under Kubuntu 6.06...
Third situation - I have color laser at work Konica-Minolta 2450DL. Manufacturer provides at its
homepage special PPD for Linux. And it works! I use same Kubuntu 6.06 Linux.
At home I also have quite often hangs at logout or shutdown. Even SysRq keys does not help... I use
ATI fglrx driver. But this is already another theme.
One of my problems may also be concerned, that I use kubuntu.org packages for KDE 3.5.5. Jonathan
Riddel warned me, that it may not be good idea to use kubuntu.org packages in mission critical
systems. Well, next try I will use only official packages. It seems like I will try Ubuntu 7.04 when
it comes out. Or perhaps I should wait half year to be sure they have most critical errors fixed...
It seems like when there is next version of Ubuntu coming out, then previous version establishes
stable status. Hopefully this stable status will be established earlier in future versions, perhaps
already with 7.04 :)
Therefore I should still have Windows installed on another partition to get printed, what I need :(
Is this really that "Enterprise Ready", what Canonical, Ltd. means?
By the way - does anybody know, when will come out next Long Term Support version of Ubuntu? Or was
6.06 the only one? I hope, that the next LTS version will be more ready than 6.06. Everything is
under development and in one beautiful day it works. I hope...
My conclusion - if you have some printer, what uses specific printing language (e.g. Samsung GDI),
then it probalby will not work. If you have PCL or Postscript printer - then you may have hope, it
will work. I found Xerox Phaser 6110 at here -
http://www.office.xerox.com/printers/color-printers/phaser-6110/enus.html
There I see:
Linux Print and Scan Driver
Version: 1.0 Date: 10/26/2006 Size: 27.5MB Language: English (US)
PPD Files for Linux operating system
Well - this driver should work. When I look to Linuxprinting database, I see:
http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Xerox-Phaser_6110
There is one link to the http://foo2qpdl.rkkda.com/
When I open this webpage, I see:
*** DON'T USE the foo2zjs package from Ubuntu, SUSE, Mandrake/Mandriva, Debian, RedHat, or Gentoo!
*** Download it here and follow the directions below.
Well - I hope, these instructions and driver from this page would help you. Let us know about
results. It is quite disturbing to compile whole stuff yourself but it seems like it's destiny for
Linux users...
