The only completely free version (without evaluation) is the VMWare 
Player (available in the Multiverse repository), but it lacks the 
ability to create virtual machines. You can get around this with 
http://www.easyvmx.com/ it makes them for you.
If you want the workstation or server versions, then you go and grab the 
evaluation version and use the key they send. It's normally good for 30 
days, after the 30 days, you can the just grab another key from the site 
and just keep doing that. You can request as many evaluation keys as you 
want. So the "free" version and the "evaluation" version are the same, 
except for the player.
