I'll second that assertion.  I tried that around the time the old hotplug 
packages got deprecated.  "Non-trivial" is probably understated.  It's a real 
spaghetti bowl of duct tape trying to get that mess to hold together.  
Easier, and more sensible by far to go with the flow, and work with udev.
