apt-get newbie questions

If you like GUI, try synaptic.  It is gnome, but I think the interface and 
speed are far superior to adept.

If you are comfortable using the command line, I find that apt-get is much, 
much, much faster than adept.

I use the gui (synaptic) for searches, and apt-get for actual management .
