Hi!
I've recently updated to Feisty on my DELL Inspiron 640m / e1405 and sound
works flawlessly. Can you tell us, what kind of sound card is built into
your laptop? Perhaps that is the reason...

Kind of obvious advice:
Check if all the volume controls are cranked up...
