Lockup at login screen

I have a problem maybe someone can help,
Using kubuntu 7.04 everything has been working correctly for a few
weeks. Now when booting the kde login screen appears and the system
locks up. No mouse movement and keyboard is dead with the caps lock and
scroll lock lights flashing. Last person that was logged in is showing
in the username box.
If I boot in recovery mode I can type startx kde starts as normal.
This happened once before but somehow I managed to get it corrected.
Think I edited my xorg.conf file.
Current contents are: keyboard and mouse sections)
xorg.conf
----------------------------------------------------
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
Driver "kbd"
Option "CoreKeyboard"
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "us"
EndSection
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Configured Mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "CorePointer"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
# Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
# Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
Option "Buttons" "5"
EndSection
To get it to work last time I switched the comments on protocol section
but that didn't work this time.
Anyone have any ideas. I am logged in as root and don't really want to
do that.
Thanks
Doug
