is it indeed difficult to install a program in feisty fawn?

This sounds like you are booting from the Live CD and then using the install 
icon on the desktop. This is to install Linux onto your hard drive, it's not 
for individual apps. 

It sounds like you need to install Linux onto a drive -- is this right? We can 
help from there.
