Bad Kernel in CD?

I am having trouble with the Kubuntu 7.04 disc. It begins loading the kernel
fine, but then starts saying ata2 is slow to respond and keeps pausing for
it to respond. It eventually booted up, but took like half an hour on
my 2.0GHz 1GB RAM computer. That was with the CD I ordered from
Canononical. Now,
it won't boot at all, it just freezes. I downloaded the ISO from two
mirrors, md5sum-ed them, and compared the two. They were the same. I burned
them to a CD-R and CD-RW. I still get the same errors. I solved it once by
using a different kernel after I finally got it installed. Now, I can't even
get it installed so I can change the kernels. Is there a way to use a
different kernel and initrd to boot with since the default kernel is pretty
much trash on my system? Or can I manually install it somehow?
