AMD deciding _now_ what to do about Linux

I understand that ATI is currently formulating a policy on Linux
drivers.  I know that you are concerned about respecting third-party
copyright and patents. You may also lack the technical resources for
feature-complete Linux driver development.

There are solutions for both of these issues.  If you can not release on
open source driver yourself, the next best thing is to provide complete
specifications to the free/open source software community.  They can
then develop a driver at no charge, which will result in it being
included in all distributions.  If absolutely necessary, these
specifications can be provided under NDAs, but the NDA should be offered
to anyone with an interest in driver development.

As a paying customer, I hope for reliable, feature-complete, open source
drivers for my ATI card.  Please do what it takes to make this possible.
