I might be missing something here but I believe you can go to Adept Manager
and install Gnome desktop. I believe that is what I did. I had Synaptic
Package manager in KDE. I don't use Amarok so I don't know about that, and
of course I can log into sessions in KDE or Gnome. Oh, and I had to add  the
Synaptic Package Manager using Adept. Tim
