ATI driver: which is the right procedure?

I experienced fairly regular whole-system lockups with the drivers in the 
repos when doing 3D things. I'm currently testing the new ones (from ATI) to 
see if the same occurs, and haven't had a lock up yet (but am not speaking 
too soon). Just one branch of testing to find the problem, I guess...
