Is there a list of supported out-of-the-box video cards?

I am using an Nvidia 8600GT 256meg video PCI-express card on Kubuntu 
Feisty Fawn that is not supported unless a driver is downloaded and a 
kernel re-compile is done.  I don't want to do that.  The card runs very 
slowly with a glxgears of only 150 fps.

If I could find a list of supported cards I'd just buy one at the local 
Fry's.  Is there such a list?
