Sorry, I lost the thread (OK accidentally deleted it!)

What I did was edit this file:-
/usr/share/apps/kdm/themes/kubuntu/kubuntu.xml

On line 5, change it to the name of the graphic you want to use for the login 
screen

On line 10 alter the X Y percentage settings to move the login prompt to a 
better area of the graphic if necessary. It works better placed over an area 
of sky in your graphic than over for instance a bunch of tree branches.
