Looks like bug #38915

For me the the following fixed the issue:
sudo vi /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf
Scroll down and uncomment and change the line to:
AlwaysRestartServer=true
Save the file, logout and login anew.
If you're uncomfortable with vi, use any text editor of your liking.
