weird ext3 problem

Today found this trying to mount an smb share: mount gave me an I/O error.
I looked up the mount:point and found this:

$ ls -l
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2007-06-06 20:28 a5
?--------- ? ?    ?       ?                ? a7

a7 is the one in question.
I went into runlevel 1 and ran fsck, told me everything was fine. It wasn't.
Booted Slackware on the same box, had a look - all fine.
rm -rf'ed the dir and recreated it. Still fine.
Rebooted to Kub - all the same again.
Is there something wrong with the ext3 in the Kubuntu kernel?
