problem with GRUB

Ah, sorry.  Then you were probably right.

Probably.  At some point they'll all become /dev/sd* but that's not a
problem for now.

So you have everything installed on the external drive, right?

Now boot to the LiveCD, open a konsole terminal there, and
run "grub-install /dev/sda".

That _should_ put grub onto the MBR of your external drive.
